Does LCMCD have a set schedule for spraying mosquitoes?

There is no fixed schedule for mosquito treatments. Adult mosquito spraying is conducted only when mosquito populations reach thresholds established by state guidelines. LCMCD uses multiple ongoing surveillance methods to monitor and measure mosquito activity across the county.


What methods are used to control mosquitoes?

Mosquito control includes four main strategies: prevention, source reduction, larviciding, and adulticiding. Prevention and source reduction—like removing standing water—are the most effective. Larviciding targets immature mosquitoes in water, while adulticiding is a last resort used at night to minimize harm to other insects.


What is the difference between larviciding and adulticiding?

Larviciding targets mosquitoes in their larval stage while they’re still in water, preventing them from becoming flying, biting adults. Adulticiding, on the other hand, targets mosquitoes that are already active and flying, and is typically done in the early evening when mosquito activity increases and populations exceed thresholds set by the state.


Does LCMCD control any other insect species besides mosquitoes?

The LCMCD was established to reduce mosquito-related health risks and nuisance issues. While treatments targeting adult mosquitoes may also reduce other biting insects, spraying is only conducted when surveillance confirms that mosquito populations meet treatment thresholds, not based on the presence of midges or no-see-ums.

Lee County is one of the most prolific mosquito breeding habitats in the world, thanks to its 56,000 acres of salt marsh. The combination of a vast coastline, flat terrain, and subtropical climate supports year-round salt marsh mosquito production. Use window and door screens, and place fans in outdoor areas to deter them. EPA-approved repellents can also help protect you from bites.
