Education Programs

Understanding the unique ecosystem that makes Lee County a prolific breeding ground for mosquitoes is important to knowing why mosquito control is necessary for public health and comfort. For over 30 years, Lee County Mosquito Control District has partnered with the School District of Lee County to provide a Mosquito Education program. Three certified teachers from the school district visit over 20,000 students a year to bring a comprehensive curriculum to elementary, middle and high school students. The program includes state approved standards with interactive, hands-on activities. In addition to public schools, the Mosquito Education program instructs private schools, attends career days, and teaches summer camps.

Kindergarten Program: This program is designed to introduce our youngest learners to life science. This science-readiness lesson teaches students about the characteristics of insects, including the insect life cycle.

Grade 5 Program: Students participate in activities that help them learn about the relationship between weather and mosquitoes, the life cycle, diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and control methods.

Grade 7 Program: This program emphasizes both the importance of insects to the natural systems and the health and economic problems posed by insects. Students participate in a mosquito identification lab.

High School Biology Program: During the biology lab, students realize that biological agents can be an alternative to chemical pesticides for pest control. Based on the results of this authentic lab experience students make real-life conclusions.
