Mosquito Fish

The Mosquito Fish, Gambusia holbrooki, is a native freshwater species found in abundance throughout Lee County. These fish, while tiny in size, can have a huge impact on the mosquito population. Each fish can eat up to 300 mosquito larvae per day. With such a ferocious appetite, these fish can reduce, or even control, mosquitoes without the use of insecticides. LCMCD raises mosquito fish year-round and releases them in the summer months for a natural form of mosquito suppression. These little fish play an important role in LCMCD’s Integrated Mosquito Management approach to mosquito control.

Residents are also able to request mosquito fish from LCMCD for use in ornamental fishponds and other potential mosquito habitats.
